 Social Development Milestones

As a preschooler, your child will continue to develop social skills, enjoying interaction and play with his or her peers, siblings and parents. Here are some of the typical signs of social and emotional development of a child between the ages of three and five. Your child should reach the following social and emotional milestones by his or her fifth birthday.

Your preschooler (three to four years of age)

  • will show many kinds of fears such as fear of loneliness, fear of monsters, fear of darkness, etc.
  • will cooperate with friends and siblings while playing.
  • likes to take turns.
  • imitates elders quite frequently.
  • shows a wide range of emotions such as being, happy, sad, lonely, excited, etc.
  • can be stubborn and throw tantrums if you don’t agree with him.
  • understands the concept of ‘mine’ and ‘yours’.
  • is very inventive in fantasy games.
  • views himself as a mature person.
  • has his own opinions about different things.
  • wants to dress and undress himself.
  • confuses fantasy and reality.

Your preschooler (four to five years of age)

  • wants to dress, speak and act like her friends.
  • agrees easily with rules most of the time.
  • can understand the concept of right and wrong.
  • distinguishes differences in gender.
  • becomes more aware of others’ feelings.
  • can change rules herself while playing.
  • likes to sing and dance.
  • becomes more independent in everything she does.
  • wants to please her friends and parents.
  • is still not able to distinguish between fantasy and reality.
  • can use a variety of words to express her anger rather than expressing it physically.
