Motor Skills Milestones of a Preschooler

Your child’s muscles are developing, which helps him or her to perform physical activities. The general milestones given below involve both the development of larger and stronger muscles and of the fine and small muscles of hands.

Your preschooler (three to four years of age)

  • walks steadily and runs around easily.
  • can walk up and down stairs alternating feet without support.
  • rides a tricycle and throws big balls towards her peers.
  • can jump with both feet together from a minimum height of twelve inches.
  • can stand on one foot for three to four minutes.
  • can feed herself well with a fork and spoon.
  • can make simple objects (snakes, cookies, balls, etc.) with play dough.
  • can build a tower of almost ten blocks.
  • can cut across a straight line.

Your preschooler (four to five years of age)

fine-motor-skills

  • can perform a somersault.
  • can walk forward and backward easily.
  • can balance himself on one foot for seven to ten minutes.
  • uses a slide decently.
  • has a solid, non-shaky hand movement and can hold crayons like his elders.
  • can cut along curved lines with scissors.
  • starts to colour inside the lines of pictures.
  • can dress himself but needs help with zips and buttons.
  • can draw a triangle and a square.
  • can copy some capital letters.
  • can spread butter or jam with a table knife.
