Solid Food

A Guide to Solid Food for Babies

This step-by-step guide will help parents to introduce solid foods in an organized way so that their babies will grow to enjoy a variety of healthy foods.

When to Start Solid Food

Experts agree that six months is an ideal age for starting solid food, although some experts suggest that there is no harm introducing solids before six months of age or when a baby doubles his/her birth weight. The age of six months is the recommended standard, though.  Other than age, below we will provide a list of signs indicating that your baby is ready for solids.

You can introduce solids

  • when a baby can sit up with or without support.
  • when a baby can grab food with his/her thumb and finger.
  • when a baby shows interest in your meal.
  • when a baby tries to grab food and put it in his/her mouth.
  • when a baby can chew.
  • when a baby can keep food in his/her mouth rather than letting it dribble out.
  • when a baby wants to nurse more often or when he/she empties the bottle quickly.
  • when a baby wakes up more often during the night to feed.
  • when a baby is able to say yes to food by leaning forward for food and say no by turning away or by pushing away the food (which usually happens at six months of age).

As parents, learn to decode your baby’s gestures and offer food accordingly. Be cautious about your baby’s likes and dislikes, but make sure you keep trying to introduce healthy foods at regular intervals, even if your baby doesn’t like a particular food. He or she will eventually start eating it if you persist.
