Communication Milestones
Communication becomes even more important for school-age children because at school, words help them express their viewpoint to their peers and teachers. Here are some of the specific developmental signs your child should demonstrate.
Your child (five to seven years of age)
- starts understanding grammar.
- can understand the difference between present and past tense.
- can understand that one word may have different meanings, for example, how ‘smart’ can mean both ‘intelligent’ and ‘neat and stylish’.
- understands that plurals are not necessarily made by adding ‘s’ to a word. For example, she knows that ‘children’ is the plural of child, not ‘childs’.
- can express herself more powerfully by using more complex sentences.
- can understand metaphors and phrases, for example, ‘make up your mind’.
Your child (seven to nine years of age)
- develops her imagination and likes telling stories
- correctly uses pronouns and linking words like although, because, before, after, etc.
- can understand the difference between what and why, for example, ‘What did you do?’ and ‘Why did you do that?’
- gains confidence in public speaking.
- knows many rhymes by heart and is pleased to recite them in front of others.
- develops vocabulary at a greater speed.
