Communication Milestones of a Preschooler

During the preschool stage, children’s language skills continue to increase. They learn how to use words for expressing their needs and desires, and their vocabulary grows and sentence structure becomes more complex. It is important to remember that you shouldn’t compare your child’s communication/language skills with other children of the same age as such skills can vary. Some children are shy and some are more expressive and talkative by nature. But the milestones given below are the ones commonly reached by most children by the age of five.

Your preschooler (three to four years of age)

  • develops a vocabulary of 900–1000 words and understands 75 per cent of conversation.
  • can speak complete sentences of three to five words.
  • understands the concept of time as expressed by words like ‘now’, ‘soon’, etc.
  • asks lots of questions using words such as who, what, where, etc.
  • understands and uses pronouns such as ‘I’ and ‘you’.
  • understands and uses prepositions such as in, on, upon, under, etc.
  • enjoys picture books, songs, and nursery rhymes, and being read to by his parents.
  • can identify an object according to its function, i.e., he can tell what the things he plays with are.
  • may repeat some words or phrases while trying to convey his desired meaning.
  • may start stuttering or stammering, which he outgrows once he masters the language.

Your preschooler (four to five years of age)

  • likes to talk about everything around her with the help of a vocabulary of four to six thousand words.
  • can ask questions about the things she sees or does from an absolutely strange angle.
  • speaks fluently and understands the concept of opposites and singular and plural words.
  • talks a lot using longer sentences of five to seven words, though she doesn’t have logic in thinking.
  • follows three-step commands such as ‘turn the TV off’, ‘wash your hands’, and ‘come for dinner’.
  • wants to know the reason for everything by using the words ‘why’ and ‘how’.
