Communication Milestones

Children begin to understand language before they even start speaking. Their ability to listen is far more efficient than their elders can imagine. It helps them develop an understanding of their surroundings and lays a foundation for oral communication in the future.

Toddlers are in the midst of experiencing a language explosion. They find themselves in a world full of words and sounds to be learnt. At any given moment they are hearing and processing all kinds of sounds and words from their surroundings.

Most toddlers show some of the signs of communication development listed below.

Your toddler (one to one and a half years of age)

  • speaks words like ‘mama’, ‘baba’ and the names of objects.
  • recognizes her name when called.
  • has a minimum vocabulary of ten words.
  • responds to sounds in her environment such as the door bell or phone ringing.
  • understands simple instructions.
  • points to her body parts when asked.
  • shows you something by naming the object.
  • tries to imitate many words (meaningful and meaningless) and sounds.
  • can say ‘no’ either by speaking or by shaking her head.

Your toddler (one and a half to two years of age)communication

  • has a minimum vocabulary of ten to twenty words (toddlers usually know 40–50 words).
  • starts using words to express his demands (milk, water, no, yes, etc.).
  • can speak a combination of at least two words (my doll, yummy juice, etc.).
  • can speak a simple sentence of three to four words.
  • adds gestures to his words to help make himself understood.
  • repeats words overheard from his elders.
  • repeats different words while playing.
  • points to objects in a book while listening to the story.

Your toddler (two to two and a half years of age)

  • has a vocabulary of at least 200 words.
  • asks questions about different objects (‘Where is my ball?’, ‘What is this?’, etc.).
  • talks with her toys while playing.
  • can form plural nouns (books, balls, dolls, etc.).
  • identifies more and more body parts.
  • asks for food and drink when she is hungry or thirsty.
  • can tell you when she’s feeling sleepy.

Your toddler (two and a half to three years of age)

  • can tell you his name, age, and gender when asked.
  • wants to talk with you all the time.
  • drives you crazy with his series of questions.
  • can name his friends.
  • plays pretend games.
  • understands words such as ‘in’, ‘out’, ‘under’, ‘up’, etc. communication
  • talks a lot with strangers to understand them.
  • can use the past tense, though not always correctly.
  • understands the concept of yesterday, last night, etc.
  • can differentiate between opposites like big/small, good/bad, etc.
  • imitates his elders while they are talking on the phone.
  • can talk using the pronoun ‘I’ instead of his name.
  • invites adults’ attention by saying, ‘Look at me’.
