Diet During Pregnancy

Diet – Off Your Menu During Pregnancy

Raw or Under-cooked Food

Eggs

A half-fried egg is one of the essential ingredients in a typical Pakistani breakfast, but it is very important that you avoid eating raw yolks when you are pregnant. Fry the egg until it is fully cooked; break the yolk with a spoon and let it cook properly.

Raw or undercooked eggs are also part of soft-whipped ice cream and some desserts. Women fond of sweet dishes need to be more cautious.

Under-cooked Meat

Under-cooked meat should be avoided, and though Pakistani food is usually overcooked, sometimes the food at restaurants is not properly cooked.  If this is so, don’t risk eating it. You should also be cautious about the ready-to-eat meat meals that have gained popularity in Pakistan. They should be cooked or heated through properly before eating. If you are not sure that they are cooked properly, avoid eating such meals. There is always the risk of food poisoning in raw or undercooked food.

It is not certain that raw eggs or meat will infect you, but there certainly is a risk, and it is important to avoid taking such risks during pregnancy. You may hear comments from the people around you: ‘Hey! Nothing will happen. I used to have half-fried eggs twice a day. Look at my babies—they are pretty healthy. You don’t have to follow the doctors all the time!’ But everyone’s bodies react differently so avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Excessive Caffeinediet- off your menu in pregnancy

More than 200 mg of caffeine increases the risk of miscarriage. There is no harm in drinking two mugs of either tea or coffee. Just don’t drink two mugs of tea and two mugs of coffee. However, as women in Pakistan are encouraged to drink more milk, they naturally drink less tea and coffee, too.

There is also caffeine in other drinks, like the ready-made energy drinks that have become fashionable in Pakistan. Remember, one can of an energy drink has up to 80 mg of caffeine. Similarly, if you are a chocolate lover, keep in mind the amount of caffeine present in chocolate. One 50-gram bar of milk chocolate contains 25 mg of caffeine.

Even though reading product labels for ingredients is not customary in Pakistan, it is recommended that you check the amount of caffeine in any caffeinated food or drinks that you decide to have.

Pre-prepared Salads and Fast Fooddiet- off your menu in pregnancy

In Pakistan we are never sure of the quality of our food—even when dining out at the best restaurants—because of poor quality control by government authorities. Avoid eating pre-prepared salads, which are called ‘fresh salads’ by the restaurants. Fast food is to be avoided as well, as it may make you gain weight, but if you are fast food addict, go for it once in a while—just make sure you go to a location where you are sure they meet all hygienic standards.

Cheese used in fast food may not be good for you and your baby.

Liver and its Products

As a pregnant woman, liver, or any product made of liver, shouldn’t be a part of your meal. Liver and its products contain a lot of vitamin A, which is not good for your baby.

Multivitamins

Sometimes, women complain of fatigue during pregnancy and they start taking a multivitamin suggested by a well-meaning friend or relative. But taking high doses of multivitamins can be very dangerous, so only take supplements or multivitamins prescribed by your doctor.
