Becoming parents for the first time is a great feeling. You will be excited and very keen to bring your little one home, make him or her comfortable, and experience all the exciting ‘firsts’ of raising a child. The experience of becoming parents also brings about great changes in life, as it will now be dictated by your baby’s likes, dislikes and schedule. But the very experience of looking at the smiling face of your baby makes you feel out of this world.

First-Time-Parents In Pakistan

Advantages of Parenting in Pakistan

Support Systems for New Parents

Becoming parents for the first time in Pakistan is a unique experience as it has some unusual dimensions. The advantage of becoming parents for the first time in Pakistan is having a support system in the form of an extended family. You always have one relative or another who can lend a helping hand in taking care of the baby. This support system is deeply rooted in the traditional set-up of Pakistani society and is not available in Western countries, where parents face great difficulties finding adequate childcare, as it can be quite expensive.

Support from Grandparents

Grandparents in particular are always there to play with the kids and offer advice based on their experience and wisdom. They are your kids’ guides, baby-sitters, teachers, their moral and physical providers, and very often their doctors, too. But with this amount of influence in their grandkids’ lives, they may sometimes get annoyed if new parents do not follow their advice—particularly their medical advice.

Disadvantages of Parenting in Pakistan

Unsolicited Parenting Advice

On the other hand, new parents are offered unwanted advice all the time. If you mention your baby’s sleeping habits to anyone around you, you will hear everyone’s different opinions on establishing sleeping patterns. If your baby is not getting enough food, you don’t need to worry, as you will get hundreds of detailed ‘formulas’ for how to regularize your baby’s feeding schedule. People always believe that they are experts at raising other people’s children!

Pressures on New Parents

If you are first-time parents in Pakistan, it is almost obligatory for you to take care of your baby while managing other household tasks. However, first-time dads do not play an active role in taking care of their child. Their role is usually limited to enjoying the baby’s smiling face, taking pictures, and trying to talk to the baby. The traditional family set-up in Pakistan makes new dads less responsible for their babies.

Social Limitations on New Dads

In more traditional and joint family set-ups, it is considered almost unmanly for a man to help his wife take care of their baby. Sometimes dads have to tolerate sarcastic remarks from their close family members if they share responsibility with their wives. If a dad dares to change his baby’s diaper, it can invite severe criticism, as this act may be considered a fatal mistake or a dreadful sin. Trends are changing though, and first-time dads of the new generation are more helpful and share responsibility with moms in taking care of the kids.
