Hurdles Faced by Mompreneurs in Pakistan

Hurdles Faced by Women and Moms

1.Traditional Pakistani Social Set-Up

Business is usually considered a man’s field in Pakistan.  This is because in the traditional Pakistani set-up, men are considered the financial support for the family. Parents will make an investment in their sons, and in turn, they can count on their sons for financial assistance in the future. While parents are usually willing to invest in their sons’ businesses, they are always reluctant to invest in their daughters’ business ventures. Dowry is the biggest reason for this attitude, as a daughter’s marriage means they will never receive any financial benefits from their investment.

Women are not considered responsible for the family finances. Therefore, they are not given any opportunities for experimenting in the business world. As mentioned above, parents are reluctant to invest in their daughters’ businesses because they usually believe their daughter will get married, and then their investment will be transferred to her in-laws. The reality is that once a woman is married, it is considered a moral crime if she gives any amount of money that she has earned to her parents, even though it is they that have invested everything to make their daughter a successful earning member of society.

2.The Reality of Being a Wife and Mother

When a woman gets married in Pakistani society and when she becomes a mom, she is expected to put her needs and desires aside and to keep everyone else happy. She is expected to take care of her home, husband, kids, in-laws, and guests as well. No matter how educated she is, she has to do all this, willingly or unwillingly, with no word of acknowledgement or appreciation from the people around. A mom’s life becomes a series of unpaid, unacknowledged and unending tasks. Entrepreneurship would rarely occur to her because of the unfavourable structure of our society.

3.Lack of Financial and Emotional Support

If with great effort a woman is able to start a business of her own, she rarely gets any kind of help from the people in her life. In most cases, even husbands and in-laws (who would benefit from her earnings) are not ready to invest in wives who are eager to start a business. The reason for this might be that everyone is ready to receive profits, but nobody is ready to tolerate the possible losses, and in our society, the failure of a woman’s business is met with much greater criticism.

4.A Woman’s Money Is Never Her Own

A woman’s business is being watched all the time by people who have nothing better to do. Her in-laws, for example, are free enough to keep track of her earnings (nobody keeps track of the expenditures though) and manipulate the environment in their favour. When a woman engages in business, her in-laws then consider it her responsibility to spend her income to take care of their needs since their son is taking care of her. But if that poor woman spends even a few pennies on her parents, who put her in a position to earn, this very news could cause a storm in the family.
