Morning sickness or nausea can happen any time of the day, despite being called morning sickness. This ‘morning sickness’ can be with or without vomiting. Nausea is one of the symptoms of pregnancy experienced by a large number of pregnant women. This is usually experienced in the very first days of the pregnancy, and some women feel nauseous throughout the whole first trimester. Women’s heightened sense of smell may cause nausea, and doctors usually won’t prescribe any medicine because they think ‘it is terrible but it is normal’.

Warning: Mostly women tend to use a toothbrush after vomiting because it makes their mouth feel fresh. Make it a point not to brush your teeth after vomiting because vomiting makes your tooth enamel soft, and using a toothbrush can harm your teeth forever.

Causes of Morning Sickness

  • Other than hormonal changes, there are so many factors that may cause or enhance morning sickness. Some women feel morning sickness only with their first pregnancy.
  • Family history of morning sickness is also an important factor. Furthermore, if you are pregnant with twins, you will be more prone to morning sickness.
  • Obesity is also considered one of the important factors in morning sickness. That is why doctors recommend losing weight before trying for a baby.
  • Stress is another factor that will make your morning sickness feel worse. Just sit back and figure out if you are feeling any kind of stress. Your answer will be a big ‘YES’. Try to relax yourself in whatever way you like because there are so many stress factors which you cannot escape living in Pakistani society.
  • Gastric problems can also cause morning sickness.

How to Deal With Morning Sickness

There is no specific medicine that your doctor would prescribe for morning sickness, as it will get better after the first trimester for most women. Don’t take any self-prescribed medicine!

  • Take small meals but don’t miss any meals, even if you don’t feel like eating.
  • Have some physical activity after every meal (walk).
  • Increase your liquid intake (fruit juices or plain water).
  • Drink small amounts of liquid again and again instead of one large drink.
  • Avoid fried food as they make you feel heavy.
  • Avoid spicy food (if you are your kitchen manager, lessen the spice in your family’s food).
  • Avoid any food whose smell makes you feel bad.
  • Try not to cook food (although this is almost impossible living in traditional Pakistani culture) because the smell of cooking can make you feel nauseous, too.
  • Try to avoid ready-made soft drinks.
  • Use fresh ginger in cooking and for making tea. Ginger is a natural anti-emetic and it can help to calm your nausea.
  • Change your eating style: instead of eating a lot at one time, divide your food into several small meals. This will help you to digest your food quickly. You should also try to eat food with low calories. Make a diet schedule to keep yourself healthy.

Typical Pakistani food, which is cooked or fried in a large amount of oil, will not help you in controlling nausea.  Therefore, try cooking your food in as little oil as you can and consume more fruit and liquids.
