Motor Skills Milestones for Toddlers

Motor skills development involves the development of muscles in a child’s body that enable him or her to hold his or her head up, sit, crawl, walk, and run. The following section lists typical motor skills milestones that are expected from normal children.

Your toddler (one to one and a half years of age)

  • can get into a sitting posture without help.
  • learns to stand alone and take a few steps.
  • walks, first with support and then independently.
  • can eat with a spoon and drink with a cup, although there may be some spilling.

  • crawls up and down stairs.
  • can seat herself on a small chair.
  • can remove her own socks.
  • can wear a hat herself.

Your toddler (one and a half to two years of age)

  • can feed himself using a fork and spoon.
  • can build a tower with almost six blocks.
  • imitates you when you draw a straight line (vertically) and a circle (the drawings may not be accurate).
  • can fit a puzzle piece into a large wooden puzzle board.
  • walks up and down the stairs with the support of somebody’s hand.

  • can stand on tiptoe.

Your toddler (two to three years of age)

  • can run quite well.
  • can fold a paper in half.
  • can pedal a tricycle.
  • can kick a ball forward.
  • can hold a pencil with her thumb and fingers.
  • puts on clothes with a bit of supervision or help.
  • can snip the corners of a paper with scissors by the age of three.
  • walks up and down the stairs one step at a time without holding anyone’s hand.
