Motor Skills Milestones

School-age children develop gross and fine motor skills at a startlingly rapid speed. Below are some of the important motor skills milestones for school-age children between the ages of five to nine.

Your child (five to seven years of age)

  • enjoys taking part in team games like cricket, football, etc.
  • can ride a two wheeler bike.
  • can run up and down stairs easily.
  • develops a strong coordination and displays it by running, jumping, doing somersaults, skipping rope, etc.
  • can draw inside the lines more efficiently.
  • can print all letters and numbers up to 20.
  • can use a fork and knife together while at the dining table.
  • can dress and undress herself (tying shoelaces may still pose a problem).

Your child (seven to nine years of age)

Motor Skills Milestones

  • has gained more strength and can play or work on a project for a longer time without getting tired or bored.
  • can perform her own personal care routines, such as brushing teeth, closing zippers, and tying shoelaces.
  • can run for a longer time and distance.
  • uses one hand more consistently than the other.
  • writes with improved handwriting.
  • begins losing her baby teeth and getting permanent teeth.
  • is able to throw and catch a ball.
  • generally has a very high energy level.
  • may have to get her eyes tested because of the increased time spent doing homework.
