He is of the view that the best thing parents can do is reading with their kids. According to him , parents should expose their kids to reading about their favorite things and people so that children’s curiosity can be satisfied and enhanced in a way. He emphasizes on parents to manage discussions regarding their kids’ favorite topics, things and people. He considers such exposure to reading as a viable influence on kids’ whole life.
‘ There ‘s genetic elements and there are environmental elements, and those exposure times- breadth and depth- clearly have long term impacts.’
Ironically, most of Pakistanis either don’t like reading books or they don’t have time to do so. Therefore, we need to make efforts to make reading our own habit then pass it on to our kids.
Children Need to Learn and Earn for Themselves
Let your kids earn for themselves. Bill Gates is of the opinion that his kids should struggle to create a niche for themselves. That is why he has given a large amount of his wealth in charity.
Microsoft billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates, who is one of the richest men in the world, said,
“You’ve got to make sure they have a sense of their own ability and what they’re going to go and do.”
He further said,
“We want to strike a balance so they have the freedom to do anything but not sort of a lot of money showered on them so that they can go out and do nothing.”
‘They won’t have anything like that. They need to have a sense that their own work is meaningful and important.’
Saving Pocket Money
Bill Gates urges his kids to save some amount of their pocket money for the poor and the needy. Their parents doubles the money they have saved to give as charity as an incentive.
Don’t Give Everything to your Kids
Bill Gates has set rules for his kids. He believes that children should be given everything at the time they demand. Parents should analyze what and when to give to their kids. This is the reason that his two kids had to wait till the age of 13 to get their first cell phone. Bill Gates and his wife thought 13 is the appropriate age for buying a cell phone for a kids. So, they followed this rule.
Children Cannot Get Anything without Making Effort
Bill Gates’ kids has to help their parents in household chores to get pocket money. In this way, they realize that nothing can be gotten without making efforts.
Expose Kids to Harsh Realities of Life
Gates Family tries to expose their kids to harsh realities of life so that their kids may know that there is another side of the picture which is not as rosy as their life is. Melinda Gates shared some details of a trip to Tanzania she made with her eldest daughter, Jen. The mother and daughter stayed with a family in a rural area, which helped them better understand the barriers to education faced by girls in the country.
