Peer Pressure in Pre-teens and Teenagers

It’s quite natural to be influenced by the people around you. There is nothing wrong with this, in and of itself, because human beings are able to discern what to accept and what to reject. But at a young age, peers pressure your children or young adults in a much more convincing way. Your children cannot get away from peer pressure, good or bad, because you cannot keep them permanently confined inside the safe walls of your home. Regardless, they are bound to be influenced by their friends.

 Importance of Peer Groups

peerpressure

Peer groups are very important in young life. Peers are a great source for learning life skills and young people learn how to enjoy the lighter side of life in the presence of like-minded people. They explore different opportunities with their friends; they feel secure with their friends. Learning to tolerate and accept one another despite having opposite points of view is an important life skill practiced in a group of peers. There is also a sense of competition among members of a group that enhances the discipline to work hard and achieve something in life. In short, peer groups contribute greatly to the formation of a young individual’s personality and character.

What Is Peer Pressure?

Peer pressure is when people of the same age group—usually your children’s playmates and class fellows—Influence your children, knowingly or unknowingly, and make them do things they might not otherwise do. Because people of all ages experience peer pressure, your children will have to learn how to deal with this pressure throughout their lives. There are two kinds of peer pressure.

  • Positive Peer Pressure

Pressure is good and healthy when it helps people to do something positive in life. For example, young people are a positive influence when they put pressure on each other to do a class science project, collect funds for a natural calamity like an earthquake or flood, study more to get good grades, or utilize vacation time for learning a skill, etc.

  • Negative Peer Pressure

Peer pressure becomes a serious issue when it starts impacting young people in a negative way. Negative peer pressure can force a young person to smoke, take drugs, or tease or bully others just for fun. Another example is boys who go out on special occasions and do ‘one wheeling’, which is dangerous. Peer groups can also convince each other not to prepare for a test and to cheat instead. Some young people tend to commit street crimes under pressure from their peers to fund lavish parties.
