Problems in the First Trimester of  Pregnancy

Dizziness

During pregnancy, the hormone progesterone relaxes the walls of your blood vessels, causing your blood pressure to fall and sometimes causing you to feel dizzy. This occasional dizziness is usually mild. The following suggestions may help:

  • Avoid standing for long hours. If the nature of your work demands long hours of standing, try sitting down for a few moments at frequent intervals.
  • Avoid standing up suddenly after sitting for a long time or after waking up from sleep.
  • You can try drinking a liquid when you feel dizzy.
  • Keep checking your blood pressure. Regulate your blood pressure with your diet schedule.

Dizziness is usually occasional, but if you feel dizziness for a long time and on a regular basis, you need to be watchful. If your dizziness is severe, and you also experience vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain, find medical help at once.

Constipation

Constipation is another problem faced by many women.  Due to physical changes, muscle contractions that move food through your intestines slow down, and the extra dose of iron taken by pregnant women causes constipation as well. Constipation is very uncomfortable during pregnancy. The following steps may help:

  • Try to eat food full of fibre.
  • Increase your liquid intake.
  • Take light exercise.
  • Try to keep your mood pleasant.

HeartburnProblems in the firstTrimester of Pregnancy.0000

Heartburn is felt by many pregnant women. Since Pakistani food is very spicy and oily, it is a major cause of heartburn. To avoid heartburn, try to eat small portions at frequent intervals and avoid eating spicy or fried food. Carbonated drinks are also a cause of heartburn, although ironically, many women in Pakistan drink soft drinks as a remedy for heartburn. Milky drinks, however, truly are good for heartburn.

Fatigue

Fatigue is an inherent part of the first trimester. Sometimes you may feel tired without doing anything. You don’t need to be worried about your fatigue; just make sure that you are taking the required iron supplement and other vitamins as suggested by your doctor.

For the first trimester (generally, women keep pregnancy a secret for the first trimester), you will feel tired due to hormonal changes. It is natural and important to rest when you need to, but getting rest doesn’t mean that you should abandon your work and be in bed all the time. Routine physical activity can actually help you overcome fatigue. Feeling overly exhausted or tired won’t be harmful for your baby, but the pregnancy will be easier to bear if you feel good.

Fatigue is also present during the last stage of pregnancy due to the baby’s weight. During the third trimester, you will not be able to get good sleep and getting up to go to the toilet frequently also makes you feel tired. Taking time for a good rest is the only remedy.

Feeling FaintProblems in the firstTrimester of Pregnancy.08

Fainting happens if your brain is not getting enough blood, and therefore not enough oxygen. You may feel faint if you get up quickly from your bed, or if you stand up quickly after sitting for a long time. To cope with this, you should get up slowly after sitting or lying down for a long time. If you have been in bed, first sit for a few moments and then stand up when you feel stable. If you feel faint in a standing position, find somewhere to sit down. Always make sure that you have place to sit down if you have to stand for particularly long hours.

Bleeding

Bleeding is experienced by many women during the early part of their pregnancy. If you have only light spotting, there is no need to worry, as it is a sign that the fertilized embryo has been implanted in the uterus. However, in the case of bleeding that is heavier than slight spotting, consult your doctor since bleeding can also be a sign of miscarriage.
