Problems in the Second Trimester of  Pregnancy

The following are issues or discomforts that you may feel during your second trimester:

  1. Nosebleeds

You may have nosebleeds in the second trimester. Hormonal changes and an increased blood supply can cause this to happen. There is nothing alarming in occasional nosebleeds, but if it happens quite often, discuss it with your doctor because it may not be one of the problems in the second trimester of  pregnancy.

  2. Irritation in Ears

You may feel irritation, itching or pain in your ears. Again, it will go away after a few hours or even days. If it stays, seek medical assistance.

  3. Gum Bleeding

You may need to see your dentist, as you may experience gum bleeding and sensitivity in your teeth. Sometimes it will be difficult to chew food properly. Try cleansing your teeth with a good quality soft brush at least twice daily.

  4. ForgetfulnessProblems in the Second Trimester of Pregnancy124

You may feel that you cannot remember simple things or forget where you put things. For example, some women forget where they’ve put the coffee they just made or where they put the keys. Don’t worry; this is normal, especially during your second trimester, and it will be over soon. Just make sure you don’t place things in some strange place.

  5. Pigmentation

You may notice pigmentation in the form of white patches or dark spots on your skin. These spots and patches disappear after delivery, so you don’t need any medicine for them. In some women, the spots are replaced by glowing and rosy skin. Overall, there is nothing to worry about.

  6. Stretch Marks

You may start seeing stretch marks in the second trimester. There are so many products which claim to help stretch marks disappear, but they are actually of little to no value, as creams and lotions work only on the outer part of your skin and stretch marks occur in the inner layers of your skin. There is truly nothing you can do about them and will have to wait until after delivery for the stretch marks to slowly fade or even disappear (which would be the ideal outcome). The more weight you put on, the greater your risk of getting stretch marks.

  7. Sweating  Problems in the Second Trimester of Pregnancy12

You may feel that you sweat more than usual by the end of the second trimester. Don’t worry; just wear comfortable and loose clothes and drink a lot of water. Medication for this is not necessary or advisable.

  8. Swelling

Your feet may swell and you may have to wear shoes a bit bigger than your actual size (this is all about ‘paon bharee hona‘ in a literal sense). Some women’s hands also swell, and they complain that their rings and bangles are too tight to wear by the end of the second trimester.

  9. Vaginal Discharge

You may experience an increase in vaginal discharge, but there is nothing abnormal in this. You can use panty liners or pads according to your needs. But if the discharge is smelly and itchy, this is an alarming sign of infection. Discuss it with your doctor immediately!

  10. Leg Cramps Problems in the Second Trimester of Pregnancy12

In Pakistan, you might have heard that getting too little calcium will make your legs cramp. This may be true, but there is no justification for the cramps you get in the second trimester, which may go on till the end of the pregnancy. If your cramps are severe, you may visit a physiotherapist, but normally they are not that severe, and you won’t need to seek medical assistance. Experts suggest some light exercises for your legs and ankles to avoid cramping. But exercise in pregnancy is a rare luxury for most Pakistani women, who usually do not have the time or the space.

  11. Backaches Problems in the Second Trimester of Pregnancy1

By the end of the second trimester, you will feel your back start to ache due to the muscles stretching. Again, this is just part of the game as your bump is getting bigger, and your back will feel pain during this process of adjustment. Try sleeping on a hard bed or orthopaedic mattress.
