Social Development Milestones
At this age, your child learns how to socialize at home and at school, and he will learn a variety of new skills to cope with his widening social horizons. Below are some of the typical signs of social development that occur between the ages of five and seven.
Your child (five to seven years of age)
- starts comparing himself to others.
- becomes very sensitive about his public image.
- is confident enough to feel comfortable in a group without his parents.
- can make rules and follow them, too.
- enjoys playing with other children in a variety of ways.
- wants to be accepted by friends.
- enjoys team work.
- still feels very comfortable and secure at home and with his parents.
- may feel pressure adjusting to school, a completely new world for him.
- may be irritating, bossy, or stubborn due to the new, unfamiliar environment at school.
- understands the reason or logic behind doing or not doing something.
- can take on responsibilities like feeding the pet or setting the table for dinner.
- wants to act like his elder siblings.
Your child (seven to nine years of age)
- may experience more peer pressure.
- starts forming more intense peer relationships, which turn into long-term friendships.
- likes to be friends with children of the same sex.
- can cope with frustrations in a better way if denied something.
- starts to understand that there are other important activities besides playing.
- likes to be in charge of younger children but is obedient to adults at the same time.
- can feel hurt very easily.
- develops a liking for someone in the family or a teacher and wants to please that particular person.
- tries to develop an independent identity, leaving behind his child-like personality.
