Social Development Milestones
You should observe the following social and emotional milestones in your toddler:
Your toddler (one to two years of age)
- is shy and doesn’t like to mix with strangers but shows affection to familiar people.
- recognizes himself in the mirror and in photographs and smiles.
- imitates his elders’ words and actions.
- plays simple pretend games.
- hugs and kisses his parents and familiar people.
- learns to say no in many situations, particularly bedtime.
- is excited to show toys and other objects to people.
- wants to be independent in everything he does.
- understands simple commands (sit down, stand up, give me a hug/smile, go to the other room, etc.).
- shows frustration and aggression either by crying loudly or by throwing tantrums.
- notices any changes in the daily routine.
- cries when his mom or dad leaves.
Your toddler (two to three years of age)
- watches other children play and wants to join them.
- shows more independence and tries to do things by herself.
- tries to dress and undress herself.
- protects her possessions.
- becomes aggressive and hits others.
- can be easily separated from her parents.
- starts to understand her own feelings.
- understands others’ feelings and notices if her parents are angry.
- shows quick shifts in mood.
- shows fear of the darkness.
- takes turns in games.
- is disturbed by big changes in life.
