Your first trimester covers the first three months, which are weeks 1–12.

Here are some key pointers for your first trimester:

  1. Start of the First Trimester:

Your first trimester starts even before you know that you are pregnant. By the time your pregnancy is confirmed, you have already gone through almost one and a half months (six weeks) of your pregnancy.

  2. Fast Baby Growth:

In the first trimester, your baby grows very quickly, and by the end of this trimester, your baby’s organs are fully developed. You may find it interesting to know that your baby has started swallowing now.

  3. No Self-Prescribed Medication:

You will surely have heard that you are forbidden from taking any kind of medicine during the first trimester. Pregnant women are asked not to take any medicine because during the fourth through the sixth week, your baby’s brain and spine are already developing and could be negatively affected. (Avoid any self-prescribed medicine at any stage of your pregnancy, by the way. Let the doctors do their work—they are qualified to advise people like you!)

  4. Organ Development During First Trimester:

Facial features such as the eyes, nostrils, and mouth are also developing at this time. The most important organ, i.e. the heart, is already in the early stages of formation.

  5. Physical Tiredness and Emotional Instability:

At this stage, you might feel very tired because your baby is growing very fast and taking most of your energy. You may feel very unstable emotionally, too. You may feel irritated and feel like crying for no reason. All of this is normal at this stage of pregnancy i.e. first trimester.

  6. Confirmation Visit to Your Doctor:

When you suspect that you are pregnant, visit your doctor immediately to confirm your pregnancy. Ask as many questions as you want. It is better to write down all your questions and concerns so that you don’t forget when you are with the doctor. Otherwise, you’ll probably miss a lot of points, which will only come to your mind after you have finished your appointment.

  7. Communication With Your Doctor:

If your doctor agrees, communicating via text messages is an easy way for you to ask questions as they come up and for your doctor to reply at her convenience.

  8. Folic Acid and Other Supplements:

As soon as your pregnancy is confirmed, you should start taking folic acid, as it will help your baby’s spine develop. In fact, it is recommended that you start taking folic acid as soon you have decided to get pregnant. Your doctor will prescribe folic acid and a few other supplements, too, but in case she doesn’t, you can remind her.

  9. Balanced Diet:

Folic acid is found in whole grain products, beans, leafy vegetables, and fruits. However, it is usually recommended that you take a supplement because a balanced diet is not available to most Pakistani women.

  10. Baby’s Heart Beat:

During weeks 7 and 8, your baby’s organs, such as the kidneys and liver, are forming. Another great piece of news is that you can hear your baby’s heartbeat. It is a great feeling to know another human is growing inside your body. Hearing baby’s heart beat even before the first trimester ends, can be a motivating factor for a mum to take care of herself for her own sake and for the sake of her baby.

  11. Ultrasound:

You will need to have a screening test to check the overall growth of your baby. Your doctor will guide you through this process.

  12. Baby’s Tooth Buds:

Your baby’s tooth buds are growing, and the fingers and toes are visible now.

  13. Increased Thirst:

During the last few weeks of your first trimester, you will feel thirsty due to fluid lost through sweat and urine.

Another Ultrasound: You may be asked to get a second screening test. You can get an ultrasound report in the form of prints or on CD. It is interesting to look at the images of your baby, but doctors advise parents not to guess anything from these images. This kind of ultrasound report is not in fashion at every doctor’s practice in Pakistan, but you can ask your sonographer if he can provide you with a video or printed report. It will be very interesting to see your baby in action at this stage. But  your doctor may advise you to delay this ultrasound for a few days  or a couple of weeks and you may be required to get this done after the first trimester.
