A Survival Guide for First-Time Dads in Pakistan

Becoming a dad for the first time is a cool feeling. You feel excited for your baby and have a lot of dreams for him or her. In the traditional Pakistani set-up, dads are not bothered very much about the problems their baby or wife might be facing. In the not very remote past, moms were sent to their parents’ home for delivery, which gave first-time dads a safe exit from all things related to the delivery and newborn baby.

It used to be unusual for a first-time dad to lend a helping hand with his baby, and if he did, he was sometimes made fun of. The situation is even worse for a first-time dad in a joint family system. If a husband tries to help out by making a bottle for the baby or changing diapers, for example, it is not just considered unmanly, it means that the man was under the influence of his wife. Due to these taboos, first-time dads in Pakistan have often been unable to share in the joy of being a parent. Though Things are changing in modern times but this kind of attitude is in the very roots of Pakistani culture.
