Toddler Safety… Burn & Strangulation Alert!
Burn Alert
Safety measures should be taken in the kitchen to prevent burns. Preventative measure should also be taken in other areas of the home:
- Keep your toddler away while ironing clothes. When you are finished, put the iron in a safe place to cool down. Never leave the iron switched on, even for a very short time.
- If you straighten your hair with a hair iron, take care to put it out of the reach of your children.
- Keep your children away while drinking coffee or tea.
- If you are boiling water for tea, keep your kids out of the kitchen—there are many instances in which young toddlers are burnt due to boiling water.
- Another common cause of burns among Pakistani children is the starch for cotton clothes that some women prepare at home.
Strangulation Alert
Sometimes parents ignore things that carry a risk of strangulation. The following steps can help keep your children safe from strangulation:
- Be aware that the tawveez (amulet) that many toddlers in Pakistan are made to wear has a cord long enough for children to strangle themselves.
- If your toddler has clothing with a belt, cord, or chain, make sure you remove these before your child wears the clothes for the first time.
- In Pakistan, young toddlers love to play with their mom’s dupattas, which can cause strangulation.
- Curtain or blind cords should be tied up properly because toddlers can strangle themselves while playing.
