Husband’s Role in Supporting His Pregnant Wife
Women agreed upon the point that their husbands want to help them, but that sometimes the family system makes it impossible for them to do so. For example, a woman described how whenever her husband brought home fruit for her, she had to share it with all twelve family members until she hardly had anything left for herself.
Husband Cannot Take Care of His Pregnant Wife
Another women shared that her husband brought nuts and dry biscuits as snacks for her because it was not easy to prepare and eat a snack in a joint family. She told us that the very next morning, her mother-in-law felt low in energy at teatime and needed dry biscuits. A little while later, her sister-in-law’s kids asked if she would share some nuts with them. She had no options left, and her husband couldn’t say a word about all this either. She also added that if she dared to cook something for herself, she had to make enough for whoever was around at the time.
Dining Out Becomes a Big Issue in Joint Family
Yet another women said that dining out provided her and her husband some moments of relief, but for some women dining out was not possible due to finances. Other women complained that a child in the family insisted on going with them, so they were not allowed a private dinner.
