Impact of Peer Pressure on Youth

Peer pressure exists for kids even as preschoolers. They imitate their peers and try to be like them at a very young age. Children continue to be influenced by peers in kindergarten and then in elementary and middle school. Much of this influence is good, as friends are an important way for children to learn and be challenged; however, some of this influence takes the negative form of bullying.

Peer Pressure Impacts Pre-teens and Teens Most

Peer pressure becomes a greater influence on kids when they are in their pre-teens, and its effects are even more intense on teenagers. This is because young adults are learning from the books, media, and people around them at a very rapid speed. They try to compete with their peers in everything they do: they wear the same clothes, go where their friends have visited, watch the same TV programmes and movies, and even celebrate their birthdays in the same fashion as their friends. However, this influence doesn’t stop at such day-to-day activities—it spills over to other negative activities as well.
